Botox vs. Dysport: How They Differ and How Long Each Lasts

Botox and Dysport are both neurotoxins, but they differ in onset, spread and cost. Here is what to know before your appointment.

Botox Cosmetic and Dysport are both injectable neurotoxins used to relax the muscles that cause expression lines. Both are forms of botulinum toxin type A, and both work the same way: they block the signal from the nerve to the muscle. But they are not identical, and the differences matter when you are choosing a treatment.

Onset

Dysport tends to show results faster, often in 2 to 3 days. Botox Cosmetic usually takes 3 to 7 days to show effect, with full results at about 2 weeks. If you have an event coming up, Dysport's faster onset may be a factor. We help you choose based on your timeline.

Spread

Dysport spreads more from the injection site than Botox Cosmetic. This is an advantage in larger areas like the forehead, where you want a smooth result across a wide muscle. It can be a disadvantage in areas where precise placement matters, like around the eyes. The injector's technique and the area treated determine which is the better fit.

Duration

Both last about 3 to 4 months for most people. Some people report that Dysport wears off slightly sooner. Daxxify is a newer option that can last longer, up to 6 months for some people. Results vary by person, area and dose.

Cost

Botox Cosmetic is priced per unit, and Dysport is also priced per unit but uses more units per area because each unit is less concentrated. The cost per area often ends up similar. We give you the number of units and the total cost before we start, so there are no surprises.

Which is right for you?

There is no single best neurotoxin. The right choice depends on your anatomy, the area treated, your timeline and your budget. At your consultation, we assess your muscles and goals and recommend one. We also offer Daxxify and Jeuveau for people who want a different option or who have stopped responding well to one.
